Globes

Facsimile globes commissioned by Greaves & Thomas, globemakers.

Martin Behaim's 1492 'Erdapfel' is a copy of the earliest surviving terrestrial globe. The globe is covered in illustrations and inscriptions describing fantastic lands, legends, superstitions, natural resources, beasts and astrological symbols. This globe has appeared in many documentaries and cinema films including the remake of Walt Disney's '101 Dalmations', 'The Mummy Returns', and 'Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone'.

Holbein's 1533 terrestrial globe is in his famous painting 'The Ambassadors'. Holbein based it on a globe made to celebrate Magellan's circumnavigation of the world in 1522.
